Akron, Ohio Transit Agency Selects Clean Energy to Operate Its CNG
Bus Fueling Facility; Station Serves 45-Bus Natural Gas Fleet
Seal Beach, Calif. (July 3, 2008) — METRO RTA, the public transit provider for the City of Akron and Summit County, Ohio, has awarded Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (Nasdaq: CLNE) a five-year contract to operate and maintain the fueling station for METRO’s fleet of 45 full-sized compressed natural gas (CNG) buses.
Located south of Cleveland, with a population of more than 200,000, Akron is the largest city in Summit County’s 420-square mile territory. METRO RTA averages six million transit passenger trips a year on more than 30 routes throughout the County.
“We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with METRO, an agency that, early on, demonstrated its commitment to environmental quality and operating cost efficiency with its choice of CNG buses,” said Andrew Littlefair, President and CEO, Clean Energy. “Ten-plus years of experience has shown them that natural gas buses are cleaner to operate and cheaper to use, which helps provides financial support in a constrained budget environment.”
METRO RTA is Clean Energy’s first customer in Ohio, Littlefair said. “And already a number of other Ohio public agencies have expressed a strong interest in converting their fleets to natural gas to help curtail harmful air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce their transportation operating costs.”
