Tempe Transit, Tempe, AZ
In Arizona, local transit districts are prohibited from purchasing diesel transit buses. Tempe Transit provides transit services for the City of Tempe and the surrounding area. After evaluating various types of fuels and buses, Tempe Transit elected to purchase 35’ buses powered by LNG. After choosing the fuel, Tempe partnered with Clean Energy to help build and operate an on-site fueling station. Tempe Transit in Arizona recently replaced and simultaneously expanded its fleet of buses to accommodate the explosive growth in the greater Phoenix area. However, under a state law, the transit agency was prohibited from purchasing another diesel bus. In evaluating the various alternative fuels available, Tempe Transit made the decision to use liquefied natural gas (LNG).

One of the decision factors for Tempe was that of range. Seeing that their routes were typically much longer than an average urban bus cycle, compressed natural gas would most likely not provide sufficient range without having to refuel midday. Because LNG is a liquid form of natural gas, Tempe Transit was able to store more fuel onboard the bus and not have to refuel during the day. In addition, because of the summer heat, the air conditioners consume more fuel than a typical bus.

Clean Energy was hired to design, build and operate Tempe’s LNG fueling facility. The station was designed with two 11,000 gallon LNG storage tanks. LNG is delivered via tanker trucks. During construction, Clean Energy encountered numerous changes and additional requirements imposed by the local Fire Marshal; however, despite the extra costs, Clean Energy did not pass the costs along to the customer. Tempe is currently consuming approximately 200,000 gallons of LNG each month.
