Airport Fleets: The Natural Gas Solution
Mindful of high concentrations of harmful emissions in and around airports—and concerned with compliance with clean air laws—many airport operators across the nation have adopted alternative-fuel vehicle policies for their ground transportation fleets; the buses, shuttles, taxis, limousines and paratransit vehicles that service the airport.
Switching to natural gas is one of the only ways an airport can effectively reduce harmful emissions. Costing less than diesel or gasoline, natural gas fuel produces up to 30% less greenhouse gas emissions in light-duty vehicles, and up to 23% lower greenhouse gas emissions in medium- to heavy-duty applications. Department of Energy reports estimate that 98% of the natural gas consumed in the U.S. is sourced in the U.S. and Canada.
In increasing numbers, vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) are replacing diesel- and gasoline-fueled models at U.S. airports. By transitioning airport ground transportation vehicles to clean burning CNG, airports can effectively curtail emissions, decrease fuel costs, and reduce dependence on imported oil.
Success Story: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
In 2007, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport opened a new 120,000 square foot, $280 million Rental Car Center, consolidating 12 rental car operations into one location. The airport deployed a new fleet of 62 CNG-powered buses to efficiently transport passengers between airport terminals and the Rental Car Center. The fleet, which replaced 100-plus diesel shuttles formerly operated by individual car rental agencies, reduces the number of traffic-clogging passenger transport trips and contributes to a new, cleaner emissions profile for the airport. The transit fleet fuels at a new state-of-the-art CNG fueling station designed and built by Clean Energy.

Taxi Fleets: The Natural Gas Solution
Taxi fleets in major metropolitan areas such as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities across the nation, are operating natural gas vehicles in increasing numbers. Natural gas cabs benefit the environment by reducing harmful emissions and improving air quality—and benefit taxi fleets and their customers in the form of lower fuel costs and clean, green performance.
According to the EPA, vehicles powered by natural gas emit 80% fewer ozone precursors and over 95% fewer particulates than conventional gasoline-powered vehicles—allowing operators to meet green taxi requirements currently implemented in cities and at airports. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is also cheaper than gasoline or diesel on a same mileage basis—allowing taxicab drivers to save as much as $0.50 to $0.75 per gallon versus gasoline.
Success Story: San Francisco Yellow Cab
As San Francisco’s largest taxicab operator, Yellow Cab Cooperative is deploying clean CNG taxis to demonstrate its commitment to the City’s Green Taxi Law, which requires San Francisco cab companies to lower their greenhouse gas emissions 20% below 1990 levels by 2012. Yellow Cab operates a sizeable fleet of over 100 emissions-reducing CNG cabs and continues to add more green cabs to its fleet. The CNG taxis provide health and environmental benefits to all San Francisco Bay Area citizens—and allow operators to benefit from lower fuel costs and access to HOV/carpool lanes on local freeways.
Drivers save on fuel costs as they refuel their clean taxicabs at a newly expanded Clean Energy CNG station located south of the city center—part of a growing network of Clean Energy public fueling stations in the Bay Area. Yellow Cab partnered with Clean Energy to place the station on its property to provide operators with easily accessible, 24-hour fueling facilities. The station is currently dispensing over 1,400 gge (gasoline gallon equivalents) of CNG fuel per day, but is equipped to dispense 1,000 gge of fuel per hour, allowing the facility to cope with increased demand as Yellow Cab and other Bay Area taxi operators continue replacing gasoline-powered taxis with CNG models to comply with the City’s Green Taxi policy.
