Clean Energy Opens First Natural Gas Truck Fueling Station
to Support Landmark LA/Long Beach Ports Clean Air Plan
In December 2007, Clean Energy hosted ceremonies to officially open a major new liquefied natural gas (LNG) truck fueling station designed specifically to support the goals of the San Pedro Bay Ports’ historic Clean Air Action Plan. This quick response by Clean Energy came little more than one year after the Ports voted their significant action.
The CAAP plan seeks to reduce overall harmful diesel fuel emissions from port sources by more than half in five years, including replacing over 16,000 dirty diesel trucks with several thousand natural gas (LNG) trucks — the cleanest trucks available — and newer diesel trucks. And this reduction would be made even as container shipments arriving through the ports are expected to increase dramatically.
Among top officials on hand for the opening were: Boone Pickens, Clean Energy founder; Andrew Littlefair, Clean Energy President and CEO; Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; and Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster.
Shortly after the station opening, the Ports voted a defined schedule to replace the dirty diesel trucks in stages with full replacement by 2012. Then the Ports enacted a container fee of $35 on all containers arriving through the ports that is expected to raise $1.6 billion over the next five years to help fund the transition in trucking to a cleaner fleet.

Clean Energy (Nasdaq: CLNE) is the leading provider of natural gas (CNG and LNG) for transportation in North America. It has a broad customer base in the refuse, transit, shuttle, taxi, trucking, airport and municipal fleet markets with more than 14,000 natural gas vehicles fueling at more than 175 strategic locations across the United States and Canada. |
