Brookhaven, NY Enables Clean, Green Refuse Hauling Services for 117,000 Homes

Officials from Clean Energy, the Town of Brookhaven, NY, and regional gas utility National Grid gathered on Jan. 27 to host ribbon-cutting ceremonies at the Town’s new compressed natural gas (CNG) truck fueling station. Designed, built, owned and operated by Clean Energy, the new station provides clean, green CNG fuel for the 67 newly deployed CNG refuse trucks that serve 117,000 Brookhaven homes.

Clean Energy Vice President Peter Grace told event guests, “Brookhaven is now the newest municipality on Long Island to adopt a clean waste management strategy by requiring that all of its refuse carters use clean-burning CNG trucks exclusively. We are delighted to help Brookhaven implement its health and environmental protection goals for its citizens.”

Town Councilman Timothy Mazzei said, “This new fleet of CNG vehicles, which now fuel daily at the station, will protect our environment and enhance the quality of life for all of our residents. The new refuse trucks are quieter, cleaner, and much less polluting than the diesel trucks they are replacing.” National Grid’s Vice President of Energy Solutions, Joe Rende, added, “Because of its benefits to the environment, natural gas is the fuel of choice for an expanding number of uses, including transportation.”
