How to Fuel
a CNG Bus

Why switch to natural gas fuel
for transit fleets?

It's cheaper.
It's cleaner.
It's domestic.
It reduces greenhouse gases.

Why choose Clean Energy?
Clean Energy provides the critical connection for the use of natural gas as fuel. As the leading provider of natural gas vehicle fuel and related services in North America, Clean Energy designs, builds, operates and maintains fueling stations; provides natural gas fuel on a long-term contract basis; helps secure financing; and assists in obtaining vehicle grants. For transit fleets, Clean Energy’s turnkey solution provides the comprehensive infrastructure and services required to facilitate the switch to natural gas.

Transit Fleets: The Natural Gas Solution
When considering fueling options for their fleets, transit operators need to address multiple concerns—concerns about complying with clean-air mandates, controlling fuel costs, and reducing dependence on imported oil. For many transit fleets, switching to natural gas fuel has proven to be the answer—because natural gas is cleaner, greener, cheaper, and domestically abundant.

In terms of clean air performance, when compared to 2010 diesel models, natural gas-powered vehicles reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 23% in medium to heavy-duty applications and produce less smog-generating nitrogen oxides (NOx) and harmful particulate matter (PM). Helping to control fuel costs and providing a significant cost benefit to transit operators, natural gas fuel averages up to $1.00 less per gallon than diesel fuel. And, according to Department of Energy estimates, 98% of the natural gas consumed in North America is sourced in North America, therefore deploying natural gas transit vehicles helps reduce dependence on foreign oil.

For all these reasons, a rapidly growing number of transit agencies across North America—from Boston to Phoenix, Denver to Vancouver, and Los Angeles to Washington DC—are transitioning their fleets from diesel and gasoline to natural gas fuel. Today, 25% of all new transit buses on order are natural gas-powered.

Clean Energy: The Critical Connection

Clean Energy reliably fuels more than 5,000 natural gas buses across North America every day, supplying both compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to transit fleets that include LA Metro in Los Angeles, Metro RTA in Akron, Ohio, and TransLink in Vancouver, Canada.

CNG Success Story: Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority — The Nation's Largest Clean Air Fleet
Nearly one-third of California's residents—more than 9.6 million people—live and work in Greater Los Angeles County. To transport those residents to their destinations each day, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro) deploys buses on 191 routes that cover a 1,433-square mile service area throughout L.A. County.

Taking a leadership position among U.S. transit operators, Metro has switched 99% of its overall transit bus fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG), and currently deploys America’s largest CNG-powered clean air bus fleet—more than 2,500 buses.

In 2010, Metro entered into a contract with Clean Energy that will result in Clean Energy assuming sole responsibility for supporting Metro’s entire CNG bus fleet. Clean Energy will operate and maintain all 10 of Metro’s CNG fueling facilities to supply the authority’s clean-air fleet with 40 million gasoline-gallon-equivalents (GGE) of CNG fuel annually. Through this partnership, Metro and Clean Energy play a proactive role in decreasing emissions in the Los Angeles basin, a region noted for its poor air quality. Being 97% cleaner than the older diesel buses they replaced, the natural gas transit buses operated by Metro and fueled by Clean Energy contribute significant improvements to Southern California’s air quality—Metro’s CNG fleet is responsible for reducing air pollution by 152,000 pounds each day, which equates to a combined reduction of 59 million pounds of NOx, CO, and PM annually.

LNG Success Story: Valley Metro Transit, Phoenix
As the regional transit system for metropolitan Phoenix, Valley Metro serves 60 million passengers per year and covers 517 square miles of area in Phoenix and neighboring Arizona cities such as Tempe and Scottsdale.

Focusing on air quality benefits and reduced reliance on fuels derived from foreign oil, Valley Metro Transit has transitioned a large percentage of its fleet to natural gas fuel and the agency now operates the nation's largest fleet of clean-burning liquefied natural gas (LNG) transit buses. Valley Metro relies on Clean Energy to supply six million GGE of fuel annually to three fueling sites that power the transit agency’s fleet of more than 400 LNG buses. Clean Energy’s reliable fueling services ensure that Valley Metro’s LNG buses not only meet vital community transportation needs every day, but also help reduce pollution and protect air quality throughout the region.
