Natural gas — The Critical Connection

In increasing numbers, vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) are replacing diesel- and gasoline-fueled models at U.S. airports. By transitioning airport ground transportation vehicles to clean burning CNG, airports can effectively curtail emissions, decrease fuel costs, and reduce dependence on imported oil.

As the leading provider of natural gas fuel and related services in North America, Clean Energy designs, builds, operates and maintains fueling stations; provides natural gas fuel on a long-term contract basis; helps secure financing; and assists in obtaining vehicle grants. Our comprehensive, turnkey solution supports low-cost, state-of-the-art, sustainable fleet operations.

Airport Fleets: The Natural Gas Solution

Mindful of high concentrations of harmful emissions in and around airports—and concerned with compliance with clean air laws—many airport operators across the nation have adopted alternative-fuel vehicle policies for their ground transportation fleets; the buses, shuttles, taxis, limousines and paratransit vehicles that service the airport.

Switching to natural gas is one of the only ways an airport can effectively reduce harmful emissions. Costing less than diesel or gasoline, natural gas fuel produces up to 30% less greenhouse gas emissions in light-duty vehicles, and up to 23% lower greenhouse gas emissions in medium- to heavy-duty applications. Department of Energy reports estimate that 98% of the natural gas consumed in the U.S. is sourced in the U.S. and Canada.

Taxi Fleets: The Natural Gas Solution
Taxi fleets in major metropolitan areas such as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities across the nation, are operating natural gas vehicles in increasing numbers. Natural gas cabs benefit the environment by reducing harmful emissions and improving air quality—and benefit taxi fleets and their customers in the form of lower fuel costs and clean, green performance.

According to the EPA, vehicles powered by natural gas emit 80% fewer ozone precursors and over 95% fewer particulates than conventional gasoline-powered vehicles—allowing operators to meet green taxi requirements currently implemented in cities and at airports. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is also cheaper than gasoline or diesel on a same mileage basis—allowing taxicab drivers to save up to $1.50 or more less per gallon versus gasoline.
